This is a North Indian miniature painting illustrating a scene from the Bhagavata Purana or related Krishna devotional literature, executed in the style of the Jaipur or Nathdwara school. This is a 19th century original hand-painted artwork and maybe 18th century givien the quality of the miniature. The painting is divided into two narrative registers: Upper register is a four-headed deity is seated with sages. The four heads identify him as Brahma, the Hindu creator god. He holds a manuscript while conversing with ascetics in a garden pavilion; Lower register is a richly dressed youthful figure sits on a swing while attendants fan and accompany the figure. Another woman approaches with folded hands. This is most likely Krishna in a garden setting, surrounded by devotees or companions. Provenance: From a Wellesley MA Estate.
