Lot 15:
Description
Attributed James Ensor framed oil painting of a crowded beach scene (most likely Ostend Beach in Belgium) with numerous characters and five jumping dogs wearing hats. Maybe indistinctly signed lower right. James Sidney Ensor (1860 – 1949) worked in Belgium and is known as one of the first surrealist artist. The artist was particularly intrigued by the carnival theme and found it an excellent means by which to capture society’s foibles. He masked his figures, giving them faces that would express their inner selves rather than their outer ones. In this way he was able to dig beneath the surface and reveal the “true face” of society. This painting is perhaps one of his best works. One of our clients bought the work around fifteen years ago from a Palm Beach, Florida and recently decided to part with it. Dimensions: 27″ x 44.5″
