Fall Auction of Fine Art and Collectibles
Lot 12:
Description
Geometric composition, oil on heavy stock/canvas, signed lower right “PM 30”. Pieter Cornelis Mondriaan (1872-1944) was born in the Netherlands and was an important contributor to the De Stijl ( a Dutch word meaning Style) art movement led by Theo van Doesburg and committed to abstraction and non-objective painting focused on geometric lines and the three primary colors. Mondrian said in 1914: “I construct lines and color combinations on a flat surface, in order to express general beauty with the utmost awareness. …I believe it is possible that, through horizontal and vertical lines constructed with awareness, but not with calculation, led by high intuition, and brought to harmony and rhythm, these basic forms of beauty, supplemented if necessary by other direct lines or curves, can become a work of art, as strong as it is true.” Provenance: Originally from the collection of Riccardo Bertelli (1876–1917), founder of “The Roman Bronze Works”, to Philip J. Schiavo who preserved Bertelli’s collection of castings and art, to fine art collector Patrick Roberts (1950-2021) and then to a NH Art Collector, the present consignor. Dimensions: 18″ x 18″
