Description
Oil on board portrait of Senator Elijah Paine (1757-1842) by an anonymous itinerant Vermont artist circa 1820s (Possibly the school of Shelton Peck). Elijah Paine graduated from Harvard and one of the first settlers in Montpelier VT. In 1790 he helped settle the boundary between New York and Vermont and was a Senator in Congress in 1795 when they met in Philadelphia and re-elected in 1801. Provenance: Painting was passed down the family line until 1980 when it went to a collector in Alton NH. Dimensions: 30″ 24″
