Description
Rare four albumen photos, circa 1864 of Fort Morgan, Alabama. Fort Morgan is a historic masonry pentagonal bastion fort at the mouth of Mobile Bay, Alabama, named for American Revolutionary War hero Daniel Morgan. Fort Morgan provided protective fire for blockade runners during the Civil War. During the Battle of Mobile Bay on 5 August 1864, United States Navy forces under Admiral David G. Farragut passed Fort Morgan and entered Mobile Bay capturing the Tennessee and the Selma. Photo #1 (7 1/8″ x 5 3/4″) showing the front and eastside. All mounted on card stock, photographed by McPherson & Oliver, 1864. Photographers William D. McPherson and J. Oliver were partners and are known for what is perhaps the most indelible photographic image of slavery itself, the iconic picture known as “The Scourged Back.”
