Description
A proclamation on silk by President Andrew Jackson’s to South Carolina during the Nullification crisis of 1832. The Nullification Crisis was a significant conflict between South Carolina and the federal government over tariffs, highlighting tensions between state rights and federal authority, ultimately foreshadowing the Civil War. On December 10, 1832, Jackson issued his “Proclamation to the People of South Carolina,” asserting the supremacy of the federal government and warning that “disunion by armed force is treason.” The proclamation states “The ordinance (nullification) is founded, not on the indefeasible right of resisting acts which are plainly unconstitutional and too oppressive to be endured but on the strange position that any one state may not only declare an act of Congress void but prohibit its execution…” Dimensions: 27″ x 20″
