Description
Charles H. Turner of Massachusetts enlisted in the 4th US Calvary on his 18th birthday, July 18, 1866 wearing this uniform jacket. The 10 year sash with ten stars was worn later in a GAR parade. Charles first enlisted in the 32nd Mass Volunteers in July 1862 but was discharged in Feb 18, 1863 after the Battle of Fredericksburg. He later performed 90 day service during 1864-5 period. He served at Fort Concho, Texas from 1866-72 with the 4th Cavalry who fought with the Comanche and Kiowa tribes. Several letters by relatives and friends to him while serving at Fort Concho as well as his bible and photos included in the collection.
