Description
Thomas Jefferson miniature painting of our third President, housed under glass in an oval gold frame. Comes with a fitted leather and velvet case. Artist signed in middle right, Initials T J on back. Provenance: Belong to Cecelia Belmont, coming from her great-great grandmother. Caroline Slidell (née Perry, descendant of Commodore Matthew C. Perry and Oliver Hazard Perry) and financier August Belmont of Belmont Stakes fame. Signed Field on right edge. Robert Field (1769 – 1819) was known for Portrait, chiefly miniature painting. In 1794 he moved to the United States as part of the influx of British artists and craftsmen enticed by the prosperity of the new republic. After settling briefly in Baltimore, Maryland, he took up residence in the nation’s capital, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. There he immediately joined a group of artists led by Charles Willson Peale. Dimensions: 3" x 2 1/4". Case: 5" x 4".
