Pre-Veteran's Day Americana Auction
Lot 15:
Description
This exceptional portrait of Washington was hanging for many years in a historical society in Pennsylvania until recently when it was deaccessioned. The original gilt frame is impressive in both size and quality. It dates back to 1820-30 when the painting was done. Although unsigned, the painting was obviously done by a very well competent artist based on the famous portrait by Gilbert Stuart. The painting and frame were covered in soot, presumably from a nearby fireplace. We had them cleaned to reveal the wonderful colors of the paint and the gold of the frame. Dimensions: Painting: 31" x 25 1/2". Frame: 41" x 36"
Condition: In excellent condition, including original stretcher and gilt frame. There was an old patch on reverse which we left alone.
