John Milton – John Milton was an English poet, polemicist, and civil servant for the Commonwealth of England. He is best known for his epic poem Paradise Lost. He was a scholarly man of letters, a polemical writer, and an of ficial serving under Oliver Cromwell. Milton is one of the preeminent writers in the English language and as a thinker of world importance. Editor: Henry John Todd 1842, 4th edition. Handsome antique set is bound in full leather, with rebacked volumes displaying elaborate ornamental designs to covers and bright stamped gilt lettering to spines. Books show very light wear at edges. Bindings are firm. Volumes have marbled edges. Pages are clean and bright. First volume has frontispiece portrait of Milton drawn by T. Simpson and engraved by T. A. Dean.
