A Commission of Colonel of the First Regiment of Militia in the County of York to Nathaniel Sparhawk of Kittery signed in 1760 by Thomas Pownal, Captain General and Governor. Nathaniel Sparhawk (1715–1776), was a merchant from Kittery, Maine and had achieved some wealth trading in wood and molasses. Sparhawk’s marriage in 1742 to Elizabeth Pepperrell made him socially prominent and was subject to John Singleton Copley’s first full length portrait ( Boston MFA). Sparhawk also inherited Pepperrell’s estate and seat on the Court of Common Pleas for York County, Maine. Dimensions: 15" x 17" in maple frame.
