Description
Encased pair of portraits of Admiral Sir Thomas Hastings and Spouse, Louisa Elizabeth Lowe. Each gold gilt frame is encased a shadow box. These portraits are the work of the Admiral Hastings , with some provenance on the back. Admiral Sir Thomas Hastings (1790-1870) was a British artist, innovator, instructor and distinguished officer of the Royal Navy. He was renowned as an expert gunner, and was the first officer to use scientific approach to gunnery. As a Royal Navy officer he participated in the 1812 battle of Malaga, escorted Napoleon into exile on Elba, commanded the ship “Excellent” and ran the gunnery school and the Board of Ordnance.
