Description
Framed photograph of Georgia O’Keeffe along with a letter composed on 21 February 1971 and latter 5 March 1971 to “Jackie” and signed clearly on page 3. Handwritten letter to “Jackie,” in part: “So many write wanting to come that I couldn’t possibly cope with it if I let them come—so I almost always say no—or say nothing at all. Particularly this winter because I do not want to catch a cold—I have seen very few of the people in this area that I might call friends—have very seldom had anyone for lunch or dinner? I understand your feeling of not wanting to come—it is a bit like my being annoyed to be called a woman painter—instead of just a painter. However, do as you will. I will be glad to have you if you change your mind.” By the mid-1920s, O’Keeffe was recognized as one of America’s most important and successful artists, known for her paintings of New York skyscrapers—an essentially American symbol of modernity—as well as her equally radical depictions of flowers.
