Description
Period framed oil on canvas painting titled ” Contentment” depicting the artist’s oldest daughter, Agnes, holding her tabby cat, circa 1850. Full description by William Frith on back of canvas. A rare portrait by British artist, William Powell Frith, (1819-1909) who was a member of a circle of artist known as ‘The Clique’ whose work was characterized by a rejection of academic high art in favor of genre painting. Frith enjoyed huge public success and on several occasions a railing had to be erected in front of his paintings at the Royal Academy to restrain the eager crowds.
