Description
Gilt framed oil on canvas painting of the “Flying Cloud” at full sail, with a Royal Navy Driver class steamship, several lighthouses and headlands in the distance. Although unsigned, this is Antonio Nicolo Gasparo Jacobsen (1850-1921) favorite subject who painting several versions of this particular vessel. Born in Copenhagen, Denmark, Antonio Jacobsen is perhaps America’s best known and most prolific painters of marine subjects. The Flying Cloud is flying an American flag with crew visible on deck and with the name “Flying Cloud on the bow. Flying Cloud was a clipper ship that set the world’s sailing record for the fastest passage between New York and San Francisco at 89 days and 8 hours. The ship held the record for over 135 years, from 1854 to 1989. Dimensions: 24.25″ x 39” Overall
